Introducing Yoga

About Theresa

I feel very fortunate to have discovered Yoga during my early teens. It was when our PE teacher was out sick that I experienced its benefits in school. At the time I found a way to not only strengthen and gain confidence in the physical body, but how to relax and distress from the demands of school life and peer pressure. In Yoga you do not have to be competitive to enjoy becoming fit. It is applicable to all age groups and capabilities. I began to study it, first teaching myself from books, and then taking it everywhere. In the summer I took it camping in Spain, and in the winter, a quiet corner in my house. Eventually my children joined me in the living room, when I couldn’t afford a babysitter, and later again when they were young adults. It’s partly because of them that I’ve now reconnected through teaching. For that I am grateful.

First Time at Yoga

When you first start a Yoga class, you’ll be astounded, at the daily range of movement you don’t usually do. Also how each body is different, and what one person can do, will not be the same for you. But try not to compare, for the intention here is, it is not so much about how it looks, but in how it feels, before, during, and after. It can be of great benefit to you and the other people in your life. In a world that’s full of e-mails, cell phones and deadlines, why not allow this to become a different form of communication. Allow it to inform you from the inside out. You might join a local Yoga class alone or go together to learn the basics, or study from an easy to follow book. With a lot of good ones out there to choose from, find the one that is right for you.

Creating Balance Through Yoga

There are many physical benefits to be gained through Yoga and in this I would also like to include the mind. It has what I call “touching on the wisdom we each have inside”. I know you’ve also experienced this. When there’s a need, Somehow, a solution will turn up. Oftentimes, this “Somehow” comes to us when we are in a more relaxed state. The ancient Yogis knew and practiced this, claiming the quality of our mind is responsible for the quality of our lives. So they created practices to help sustain a more balanced life. Training the body to focus on breath, balance and posture will help bring the mind into a much quieter state. We have a very fine nervous system. What goes on in our body often goes on in our mind. Without fail, the two are interlinked and a direct mirror of each other. This can create holding patterns, both physically and mentally, becoming our tensions and habits, building up over time. With regular practice you can distress this, by focusing on what is your more relaxed state; you can create a healthier balanced energy. With a relaxed mind and body, you will find simple solutions. In this often lies your true achievement, it is what you might discover inside, enjoying the journey.

Theresa is currently offering Yoga classes to a Youth Outreach Program in Cobh, and Monday lunchtime sessions at the Dervish Centre on Corn Market Str. Cork.
